NEW DELHI — India lives in its villages, Gandhi said. But increasingly, the people of India are dying on its roads.

India overtook China to top the world in road fatalities in 2006 and has continued to pull steadily ahead, despite a heavily agrarian population, fewer people than China and far fewer cars than many Western countries.

While road deaths in many other big emerging markets have declined or stabilized in recent years, even as vehicle sales jumped, in India, fatalities are skyrocketing — up 40 percent in five years to more than 118,000 in 2008, the last figure available.

A lethal brew of poor road planning, inadequate law enforcement, a surge in trucks and cars, and a flood of untrained drivers have made India the world’s road death capital. As the country’s fast-growing economy and huge population raise its importance on the world stage, the rising toll is a reminder that the government still struggles to keep its more than a billion people safe.

In China, by contrast, which has undergone an auto boom of its own, official figures for road deaths have been falling for much of the past decade, to 73,500 in 2008, as new highways segregate cars from pedestrians, tractors and other slow-moving traffic, and the government cracks down on drunken driving and other violations.

Evidence of road accidents seems to be everywhere in urban India.

Highways and city intersections often glitter with smears of broken windshield and are scattered with unmatched shoes, shorn-off bicycle seats and bits of motorcycle helmet. Tales of rolled-over trucks and speeding buses are a newspaper staple, and it is rare to meet someone in urban India who has not lost a family member, friend or colleague on the road.

The dangerous state of the roads represents a “total failure on the part of the government of India,” said Rakesh Singh, whose 16-year-old son, Akshay, was killed last year by an out-of-control truck in Bijnor, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, as he walked along a highway to a wedding.

The truck crushed Akshay so completely that his father could identify his son only by his shirt. The truck also ran over a second man and drove away.

Reckless driving and the juxtaposition of pedestrians and fast-moving heavy vehicles is common. The expressway that runs southeast from Delhi to Greater Noida, a fast-growing satellite city, cuts through farmland interspersed with new industrial parks and shopping malls. Small settlements of huts piled with cow-dung patties fringe the road.

During a 40-minute ride on that highway, a tractor hauling gravel was seen driving the wrong way, a milk truck stopped in the road so its driver could urinate and motorists swerved to avoid a bicycle cart full of wooden tables in the fast lane. Drivers chatted on mobile phones as they steered stick-shift cars and wove across lanes. Side mirrors were often turned in or were nonexistent.

A cluster of women in saris holding small children waited anxiously for a gap in traffic so they could race across the highway. Opposite them, a group of young men in office attire waited to cross in the other direction.

The breakdown in road safety has many causes, experts say. Often, the police are too stretched to enforce existing traffic laws or take bribes to ignore them; heavy vehicles, pedestrians, bullock carts and bicycles share roadways; punishment for violators is lenient, delayed or nonexistent; and driver’s licenses are easy to get with a bribe.

Kamal Nath, India’s minister of road transport and highways, said in an interview that highway safety was a “priority” for the national government. “Road safety is one of the major issues” the ministry is addressing, he said. The ministry is reviewing the Motor Vehicles Act and, three years after a government-backed committee recommended that a national road safety board be established, it has introduced legislation to that effect in Parliament.

International safety experts say the Indian government has been slow to act. Bringing down road deaths “requires political commitment at the highest level,” said Dr. Etienne Krug, director of the department of violence and injury prevention at the World Health Organization. India’s government is “just waking up to the issue,” he said.

Mr. Nath, who was India’s commerce minister before moving to the Highway Ministry last year, has increased highway expansion plans and is raising $45 billion from private investors to extend India’s 3.3-million-kilometer, or 2-million-mile, road network. The expansion is an integral part of keeping the economy, now at about 9 percent growth a year, humming, Mr. Nath says.

Government planners warn that fatalities are unlikely to decline soon.

When highways are built, “there are always more accidents,” said Atul Kumar, chief general manager of road safety with the National Highways Authority of India, part of Mr. Nath’s ministry.

Mr. Kumar said that his agency had spoken with local residents before building and expanding roads near towns and villages but that it could not always satisfy them. “If we accept all their demands, we’d have an underpass every kilometer,” he said. The expansion has to be “viable for bidders,” he said, and “underpasses and flyovers are expensive.”

In the rest of the world, a rise in high-speed roads does not always have to mean a rise in deaths. In Brazil, for example, new, privatized highways have much lower rates of fatal accidents than other roads.

Private companies building and running new highways in India say that their hands are sometimes tied. From his office overlooking a 32-lane set of tollbooths, Manoj Aggarwal, chief executive of the road-building company Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity, says he witnesses hundreds of traffic violations every day that he cannot stop.

“Look at this man in the middle of the road,” he said during an interview, pointing to a pedestrian slowly weaving his way through the traffic. “I can’t fine him. I can’t punish him.”

Only the police can ticket or fine speeders, or people who are on the roads but should not be. But, over-burdened and understaffed, the police are rarely available, Mr. Aggarwal said, even though he has offered to pay them extra to work on off-duty hours.

In 2008, 73 people were killed on just this 27-kilometer stretch of highway, earning it the nickname “Expressway to Death.” The death toll dropped as Mr. Aggarwal added safety features outside the government contract.

Shivani, a 15-year-old student, recently landed in St. Stephen’s Hospital in Old Delhi with a fractured right leg after just such a highway dash.

“I don’t know what happened,” she said. “I was trying to cross the road.” Her forehead and knuckles were blackened and scraped, and her eyes were glazed after a four-day coma.

She has to cross a busy highway during her one-kilometer walk to school. There are no crosswalks, no underpasses and no stoplights.

As cars increase, those who cannot afford them and continue to travel on foot, bicycle or rickshaw are more vulnerable, safety experts say. Dr. Mathew Varghese, the head of St. Stephen’s orthopedics department, said he saw hundreds of patients a year like Shivani. The government is building “economic growth on the dead bodies of the poor on these highways,” he said.

Frustrated Indians often take matters into their own hands, forming impromptu mobs to beat up offending drivers. “Road rage” incidents, where drivers step out of their cars and get into physical altercations, have become common. Some people have begun campaigns to curb unsafe driving.

“People don’t understand the value of life here,” said Manoj Gupta, a consultant from Chandigarh, whose wife was riding a motor scooter when she was crushed by a speeding bus two years ago. Helmet laws apply only to men, and she was not wearing one. The bus driver was out on bail in four or five days, Mr. Gupta said. Now Mr. Gupta stops reckless drivers to tell them about his wife and to ask them to drive more carefully.

Safety “needs to be an important part of the driving culture, and that is still lacking,” said Harman S. Sidhu, president of ArriveSafe, a road safety awareness group in Chandigarh. He started it after he was left paralyzed by a car accident in the Himalayas.

Last year during Raksha Bandhan, a festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, ArriveSafe enlisted thousands of sisters to beg their brothers to drive carefully.

Mr. Singh, the father of Akshay, the boy killed by a truck in Bijnor, said he had spent days searching for the driver who ran over his son after the local police refused to help, finally taking the police in his own car to make the arrest. Megh Singh, the investigating police officer for the case, said in an interview that the police were eager to investigate but hampered because the station has only one jeep for its 18 to 20 inspectors.

The truck driver, now awaiting trial on charges of negligent death in Akshay’s case and murder in a second man’s case, has been released on bail. The truck, which appeared to be carrying an illegally heavy load, was returned to its owner without incurring any fees or fines.

Dozens of letters Mr. Singh wrote to local and national politicians asking them to investigate overloaded trucks in the area have not been answered.

“No one wants to be responsible,” he said. “They are all passing the buck.”

The story of Mahendra Singh Dhoni is nothing short of a fairy-tale.

It's about an ordirnary man who went on to do extraordinary things owing to

You don't need to be a cricket fan to take stock of his leadership skills.

True, that Team India lost humiliatingly in the test and one-day series
against England but this does not place his leadership skills under
scrutiny.

His rare quality of extracting benefits from criticism had made India win
matches and he himself won the hearts of millions of people.

Managers and Entrepreneurs can learn so much from him and then apply it to
their real life situations.

Here's a rundown of MS Dhoni's leadership style:

On Leading from the Front

Dhoni is one those few captains in sports who have always led from the
front, more so, in a situation of crisis. Dhoni has proved to be a leader
who leads by example. The man has depicted remarkable equilibrium in many
over-heated situations. His teammates are often heard saying that he knows
how to remain cool and how to inspire others to remain so. Even senior
players like Sachin and Dravid are all praise for him. During Sourav
ganguly's farewell test match, he asked him to captain the team for some
time. This was a great gesture which established Dhoni's leadership and
humane qualities.

When it comes to motivation, Dhoni is the best captain India has ever

pressure the players were under, even a small mistake could have cost them
the match and the Cup. Dhoni motivated them and encouraged them to play

during a crisis situation but in all their day-to-day activities.

On Seeing What Others Miss and Taking Risks

Whether it is tampering with the batting order or choosing the bowlers, many
of Dhoni's decisions have been under scrutiny. But on most occasions, his
spot decisions have paid-off very well. Dhoni uses his best discretion to
weigh a situation real time. This is not to encourage entrepreneurs and
managers to take random risks but at the same time they need to read between

There have been instances when his decisions have backfired. Dhoni has

members is of paramount importance and it's the leader's responsibility to

On Criticism

Overall, Dhoni has been lucky enough to have drawn considerably less flak as
compared to other Indian cricket captains. But he does have a fair share of
criticism. Many times, his decisions like shuffling the batting order
abruptly or giving the over to someone unexpectedly. Mostly, his decisions
pay off well and he is not let down by them. It's actually the critics who
are made to eat the humble pie. If in case, his decisions boomerang, he is
humble enough to candidly admit his mistakes. His handling of criticism is
in great sync with his persona of 'Captain Cool.'

Entrepreneurs and managers are bound to attract criticism throughout their
endeavours. Learning from Dhoni, they should not be deterred unnecessarily
and let criticism make them go off the track. Criticism, in fact, can be
healthy, if taken in the right way and right spirit.

5 Nutrition and Hydration Golden rules

Getting started in healthy eating can be a bit of a daunting task. There
seems to be so much conflicting information and advice available, it is hard
to decide which bit to listen to. To stop you giving up before you begin,
here we come up with five golden nutrition and hydration rules.

Even if you only follow these few tips, it will set you well on your way to
a healthier balanced diet, without you really noticing!

1. Always eat breakfast

After fasting all night, kick-start your body's engine with some good
quality food. If you ever feel lethargic in the morning, or skip breakfast
and are ravenous by 10am, you will feel 100 per cent better if you have some
food when you get up. Top of the breakfast charts is porridge, perhaps
topped with some fresh or dried fruit. Porridge will provide you with
sustained energy and cancel out the 10am 'munchies'! Cereals provide a
simple and quick breakfast fix but try and avoid sugar or chocolate coated
varieties.

2. Hydrate

Symptoms of dehydration include unusual fatigue, dizziness, hunger, dry
skin, dark urine and general lethargy. When you consider that the majority
of our bodies are made up from water, topping up your body's fluid intake
with water and natural fluids (for example: fruit juice) is extremely
important.

3. Take the '20 per day' test

Try and eat 20 different, healthy foods each day to ensure that you are
fuelling your body with a broad range of different nutrients and to
guarantee that you are getting the full complement of vitamins, minerals and
trace elements - and that your meals are interesting too!

4. Limit or avoid salt

A high consumption of salt has proven links to high blood pressure, so
minimizing your salt intake is very important. Many foods have salt added to
them to enhance their flavor because salt is the cheapest flavor enhancer
available. For example, many ready-made soups contain up to three grams and
a few slices of bread can easily net you another gram. When the maximum
recommended daily salt intake is five to six grams per person, you can see
how easy it is to take in large quantities - unknowingly.

5. Avoid eating late at night

Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper is an old
adage but there is some truth in the saying. Many people have an 'end-of-day
load' approach to their food intake, sometimes eating a large evening meal
at 9pm, having eaten very sparingly throughout the day. Effectively they
have starved themselves during their period of maximum activity and when
they get home they are extremely hungry and eat a very large meal before
going to bed.

BALANCE IS THE KEY. MODERATION IS THE MANTRA. AVOIDING OBESITY IS THE GOAL.

The Incredible Power of “Contentment”

“It requires some Patient reading, but then it is worth it”

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” - Cicero

I’m definitely a goal-oriented person — I always have my eye on a goal, whether that’s writing a book, running a marathon, improving my blog, waking early, losing weight, or one of a dozen other goals I’ve had (and usually achieved) in the last couple of years. And once I’ve achieved a goal, I begin looking for another: now that I finished my second marathon, I’m already looking for a third.

So isn’t that a contradiction? Doesn’t that seem to indicate that I’m not content with my life? Not at all. I’m extremely content with my life, with what I have, and with who I am. I have accepted that I am the type of person who will always be striving for a goal, the type of person who enjoys a challenge, and who enjoys the journey. It’s not the goal that matters to me — it’s the journey to get there that is so fun. And I’m content with being that type of person.

So contentment isn’t a matter with being content with your situation in life and never trying to improve it. It’s a matter of being content with what you have — but realizing that as humans, we will always try to improve, no matter how happy we are.

If we don’t, we have given up on life.

Today I’d like to discuss contentment, and the amazing things it can do in all aspects of our lives. And then we’ll look at a few tips for getting to contentment.

“Happiness is self-contentedness.” - Aristotle

My Life
I’m going to use my life as an example here, only because I’m more intimately familiar with it than any other life. Looking back, I wasn’t always content. There have been times in my life when I wasn’t happy, when things seemed dismal, when I wish I had more. I wasn’t content with the way things were, and now I know that my outlook on life was a major contributor to my unhappiness.

We choose whether we are happy or unhappy. Read that sentence again if it’s not already something you consciously practice in your daily life. If you’re unhappy with your life right now, I will venture to guess that it’s because you’ve chosen to be unhappy. That sounds harsh, but in my experience it’s completely true. Edit based on reader comments: I cannot speak to whether this concept of happiness applies to everyone — especially clinically depressed or those with similar disorders, people who are starving or homeless, people who have undergone massive tragedies or abuse, or others in such circumstances. However, for most readers, I believe the principles will apply.

You might say, “But my life is crap! Of course I’m going to be unhappy!” And I hear you: I’ve had those times when my job wasn’t going well, when my relationships weren’t going well, when my finances were very bad, when I was overweight, when my life was a mess.

But listen to this: I’ve had those conditions at several points in my life. And sometimes, I was unhappy in those kinds of conditions. And others, I was happy and content. So I’ve come to the conclusion — and it’s proven true time and again — that it’s not the conditions that make me unhappy, but my choice of thoughts, of attitude, of behavior.

What behaviors and thoughts and attitudes were different between my times of unhappiness and happiness? When I was unhappy, I focused on all the bad things in my life. Not only that, but I continually thought about how bad they were, and would complain, and would ask, “Why me?” I would let myself sink into inaction and eventually depression. I would be grumpy and cause those around me to be unhappy. That, in turn, only made the situation worse. It certainly didn’t help my job.

Let’s look at the times of happiness, in contrast: I focused instead on the good things in my life. Because while I had problems at my job and with my relationships and with my finances and health and all that … there were still good things. At least I had a job! At least I had someone who loved me! At least I wasn’t sick! At least I wasn’t bankrupt and homeless! I counted, instead, my blessings. I do this when things aren’t looking so good, and it turns me around.

I had a wife and beautiful children. I had the power to change my job. To simplify my life. To get out of debt. I had my health, even if I was overweight. I lived on a beautiful island with gorgeous beaches and wildlife and greenery. I had family around me who loved me. I had the power of my words, and my books that I loved reading. I had life!

And this outlook on life helped me to be happier. It improved my relationship, because I tried to appreciate my wife. It improved everything around me, in short — and we’ll take a closer look at those things next.

I was happy, despite my conditions, because I chose to be happy. I found contentment in what I already had, instead of wishing I had something else, instead of being discontented with what I had. Contentment not only made me happy, but it transformed my life in many ways. Here’s how.

Happiness
This is perhaps the most obvious area affected on this list, because many people see “contentedness” and “happiness” as one and the same. In many ways, they are, but it’s really a matter of focus. When you’re happy, it’s really a state of being, influenced by a number of factors, including contentedness.

Contentedness, on the other hand, is a matter of being satisfied with what you have. It focuses on what you have and don’t have instead of just being a state of being. It influences happiness. However, you can choose to be content, just as you can choose to be happy, and if you choose to be content, you will be happy.

There are many ways to become happy — you can become happy by doing certain things (running, getting into Flow,), you can become happy because you are loved or in love, you can become happy because you just won a competition or a million dollars. Being content is just one way to be happy, but it’s a great way.

Simplicity
Simplicity, of course, means many things to many people, but for me contentedness is at the core of simplicity. It’s about being content with less, with a simpler life, rather than always wanting more, always acquiring more, and never being content.

Simplicity means examining why you want more, and solving that issue at its root. At the root of wanting more is not being content with what you have. Once you’ve learned to be content, you don’t need more. You can stop acquiring, and start enjoying.

Now, I won’t claim to never want stuff. I wanted a Macbook Air and I got it. It’s helping me to write this post and this book right now. (However, in my defense, I waited more than a month before buying it to make sure I needed it.) But while I am not immune to wants, I have learned to catch myself now and then, and to examine why I want something. And then I try to tell myself that I already have everything I could possibly want and need. And that contentedness leads to simplicity.

Finances
Really this is the same as simplicity, but I wanted to show it from a financial angle. The reason we get into financial trouble, oftentimes, is that we buy more than we can afford. And the root of that buying is buying things we want instead of only things we need, and the root of that is not being content with what we already have.

Finding contentment with the stuff you have and with a simpler life can lead to buying less, to buying things we need instead of want, and to only spending what we can afford. I know this first-hand, as uncontrolled spending led to debt for me, and contentedness led to me getting out of debt.

Relationships
Many times it seems that we’re never satisfied with our significant others. They don’t behave how we want them to. That’s often at the root of relationship problems, as many-headed as those problems may seem.

Instead, learn to be content with the person you love, just as they are. This isn’t always easy, as we are usually trained (by our well-intentioned but never-satisfied parents, and others around us) to do just the opposite — to try to change people. However, you will only find trouble if you try to change your significant other. You might get them to change their behavior (but most often not), but they will be unhappy, and in turn the relationship will suffer.

I will admit to having a problem with this at times, but when this happens, I try to remind myself to love my partner as she is, for who she is. She is a beautiful person, just as she is now. This has always led to a better relationship for me.

Kids
As mentioned above, parents are often not satisfied with their children. They need to be cleaner, better behaved, better in school, more organized and studious, more courteous and kind and compassionate, better groomed and better at sports. Well, that leads to the relationship problems mentioned above, later in the kids’ lives, as they have learned to never be satisfied with others and to try to change them.

It also leads to inferiority complexes in our children, in unhappiness, and in bad relationships with them. Instead, we should learn to love our children unconditionally, to accept them for the people they are, and to let them know this through not only our words but our actions.

Accept children for who they are, and they will be happier, and so will you.

Jobs
Should we be content with our jobs? Well, I won’t say that you should stick with a dead-end job. If you’re unhappy with your job, change it. That’s been my approach and it’s worked for me.

However, I have learned that being a content person in other areas of my life, and being content with my life in general, has generally helped me at any job. Discontented people tend to be complainers, or grumpy, or negative. That leads to problems at the job. People who are content tend not to complain and tend to have a more positive attitude, and in my experience that almost always leads to more opportunities, both within the job (promotions, new projects, etc.) and outside the job (job offers, networking, etc.).

Social change
I’ve heard some writers say that people like me, who preach happiness and contentedness and a positive outlook on life, are teaching people to accept social injustice and not strive for change. I disagree completely, and as someone who would like a freer society than the one in which we currently live, I have given this much thought.

My favorite social disrupter, Gandhi, had two seemingly contradictory quotes on the subject of contentedness. The first: “Man’s happiness really lies in contentment.” And the second: “Healthy discontent is the prelude to progress.”

This might seem confusing until you look at how Gandhi brought about change. He was discontent with the system of oppression in his country, so he sought to change it. However, he was content as a person, with who he was and what he had in his personal life. This inner content allowed him to have the inner power to face (and eventually beat) the very powerful authorities in his country at the time. He could face them because nothing they could do to him could take away his happiness. They could take away all his possessions, throw him in prison, take away even food, and he was content.

He taught his fellow countrymen the same lesson, to make the best of what they had in India (making their own simple clothing, making their own food) instead of wanting the commercial goods from foreign countries. Being content with such simplicity would give them the independence from foreign commercial powers, and eventually (as they are part of the same organism) foreign political powers.

So social change can still happen if you are content with yourself, with your life, but not content with the system of oppression around you. This system, in my opinion, is responsible for holding us down, for the deaths of millions of people in Third World countries … but it isn’t until we learn to be content with what we have, and free ourselves of our dependence on commercial goods, that we will be able to change the system for good.

Getting to Contentment
So if contentedness is so great, how do you get there? That’s not always easy, but here are some things that have worked for me:

Count your blessings. I mentioned this above, and in a previous post, but for me it’s the best way to get to contentment. When you find yourself unhappy with something, or with what you don’t have, take a moment to count all the good things in your life. And I would bet there are many. It puts the focus on what you do have rather than what you don’t.
Stop, and remind yourself. When you find yourself unhappy with someone, or trying to change them, stop yourself. Take a deep breath, and remind yourself that you should try to be happy with that person for who he/she is. Take a moment to think about the good things about that person, the reasons you love that person. Then accept their faults as part of their entire package.
Stop, and consider why you want something. When you feel the urge to buy something, think about whether it’s a need or a want. If it’s a want, take a pause. It’s good to wait 30 days — keep a 30-day list … when you want something, put it on the list with the date, and if you still want it in 30 days, you can buy it). Consider why you want something. Are you not content with what you already have? Why not?
Take time to appreciate your life! I like to reflect on my life, and all the good things in it, on a regular basis. I do this when I run, or when I watch the sunset or sunrise, or when I’m out in nature. Another great method is a morning gratitude session — think of all the things and people you’re thankful for, and thank them silently.
Show people you appreciate them. It’s good to appreciate people, but it’s even better to show them. Give them a hug, smile, spend time with them, thank them out loud, thank them publicly.
Breathe, and smile. Once again, advice from one of my favorite monks, but it works in this context. Sometimes when we take the time to breathe, and smile, it can change our outlook on life.
Learn to enjoy the simple things. Instead of wanting to buy expensive things, and spend money on doing things like eating out or entertainment, learn to enjoy stuff that’s free. Conversations and walks with other people. Spending time outdoors. Watching a DVD or playing board games. Going to the beach. Playing sports. Running. These things don’t cost much, and they are awesome.

Wants versus Needs

It is said that we spend the first half of our life accumulating possessions, and the second half giving them away. This is true for most people.

Why do we have to have so many things? Why do we buy things only to turn around and sell them for a fraction of the cost we paid for them at a garage sale?

We not only buy too much, but we often go into debt doing so. Self control when it comes to money is at an all time low. Our children seem to think that they should have everything that we have, ignoring the fact that some of our possessions have taken years to accumulate or to be able to afford.

Have you ever found yourself jealous of something someone else owns? How about a house, a car, clothes, jewelry, tools, appliances, furniture, a big screen television, computer, etc. etc. etc.

Do you have some preconceived notions that you just have to have a certain item (whether you need it or not) just because your family had it? My Son use to stop and look at every Grandfather clock he saw. He said he’d always wanted one.

Yes, they are lovely. However, a simple wrist watch accomplishes the same task of telling you the time. If we had a LOT of money, then we would have perhaps purchased one. With our finances, it would be an unaffordable luxury.

All families are different. Some have one television, some have half a dozen. Same have many computers and cars. We all spend our money in different ways. Some people have to have the latest- whatever it is. Their clothes must be new, they consider their furniture old in 5 years, they replace their cars often.

If you want to live like this, you will have a lot of help! Every newspaper ad, magazine, billboard and television commercial will urge you to act on these impulses. If, however, you wish to live frugally, you will be walking alone.

When you pay cash for an item at the mall, you will be asked if you have a credit card and urged to apply for one with the promise of a discount on your purchase. Mail will be in your mailbox often urging you to take out credit cards and home equity loans. You will not find any role models on television either. You are on your own.

Only you can decide what is important for you to own. When you get older you realize that when you have so much, it is just more to worry about; things break and things are stolen. It is more work having to keep things clean. You learn when you are older to choose your things more carefully.

Decide what you need to make you comfortable. Learn to distinguish between your "wants" and your "needs". Don’t be so strict that you take all the fun out of life. Everyone should have a few things that they just love, even if they are not practical. Just try and develop simple tastes!

Learn to live with less. Learn to shun envy. Appreciate what you have.
If you have less, you will appreciate what you have more.

Before you hit the mall or your favorite online store, you need to understand the difference between wants and needs.

Wants

The item is probably a "want" if it is possible to delay buying an item, substitute something less expensive, or to use something you already own.

Wants are discretionary expenses — things you might want but don’t need to live. Almost every experience and activity, from after-school sports to “shopping therapy” is a want, such as:

eating out
going to the movies
new clothes bought just because they’re the new style, when your older clothes are still stylish and functional
cable TV
cell phone ring tones
text messaging

The good news is that the cost of “wants” is completely within your control and you can choose not to spend money on these activities and things.

Needs

On the other hand, if the purchase is for something necessary to survive, it’s likely a “need.”

Needs are the items or costs you need to live:

rent or mortgage payment
transportation (car loan, public transportation pass, etc.)
utility bill
food
basic clothing such as jeans without a designer label, especially for children

Even within this category, however, are different levels of wants and needs. For example, a winter coat when it is snowing outside is a need, but a new shirt to change up your wardrobe is a want. Cooking inexpensive meals at home is a need, eating out at fast-food restaurants or getting take-out is a want.

Some of these costs — housing and transportation costs, for example — are regular and predictable each month and you don’t have a lot of control over these amounts unless you refinance a mortgage or buy a less-expensive car.

Think Before You Spend

Before you buy something, ask yourself, “Do I need this item, or do I just want it?” You may be surprised at how many things are actually “wants.”

If you have found that spending your money on wants makes you feel good so you forget your troubles for a while, remember how you feel when the bills arrive. Usually the euphoria is long gone and you’re left with worry at paying bills you can’t afford.

Fitness isn’t just about working out and eating right– the way you think and feel can have a big impact on your health as well. You don’t have to be a monk to enjoy these kind of benefits of putting mind over matter, however, as research is showing a powerful connection between mind and body that can be accomplished by anyone determined enough. Here are some ways that you can use your brain power to make you happier, healthier and more fulfilled every day.

General

Here are a few simple ways you can change your thinking in a way that can have a positive impact on your health.

Get out negative emotions. Letting negative feelings and emotions build up can cause negative health effects as they stress you out and make you feel bad overall. Give yourself an outlet to think about and deal with these emotions rather than just ignoring them.
Try hypnotism. Many people report that hypnotism allows them to change their thoughts and behaviors. While it may not work for you, it doesn’t hurt to try it out to see if it can’t help you to change your thinking about bad habits and negative attitudes.
Realize change is possible. When reflecting on things you want to change in your life, don’t get discouraged by goals that seem far off. Remind yourself of things you’ve changed in the past and use that to motivate you to change things from unhealthy habits to the way you deal with stress.
Think about things that energize you. If you’re feeling run down you may be able to use your brain instead of caffeine to give yourself a jolt of energy. Try thinking about things you love to do or that you’re excited about taking on. This may wake you up enough to get you started on your day.
Imagine yourself aging more slowly. They say you’re only as old as you feel, and that can be true if you think young. Visualize yourself aging more slowly and staying healthier longer and you may have a better chance of actually doing so.
Feel in control. Don’t let things in your life override the way you feel or think. Use your thoughts to figure out a way to get control of a situation whether it’s at work, at home or your entire life.
Embrace your faith. Studies have shown that having faith can have a big impact on your recovery from illness and possibly your overall health as well. If you do have a faith that you follow, make it a part of your mental wellness routine.
Trust in yourself. You won’t be able to change much with your thinking if the first thing that comes to mind is how you’ll likely fail. Trust that you can make a difference in any aspect of your life you want to bring more happiness or well-being to and chances are you will.
Be honest. There isn’t much use in trying to think yourself healthy if what you’re thinking is a lie. Be honest with yourself about your past, good or bad, and commit yourself to thinking about making realistic, healthy choices.
Live consciously. Don’t blindly go through life eating what is put in front of you or doing things just because they may be easier even though they may harm you in the long run. Follow your own thinking and make your own decisions about everything that comes into your life.
Accept what comes your way. There are some things in life that there is no way to change, no matter how much you think about them. Learning to turn your thoughts to acceptance rather than forcing things to change is a big part in maintaining mental and physical health.
Forgive yourself. We all make mistakes, do things we regret and go back on our word sometimes. Don’t let minor setbacks destroy the positive thoughts you have for yourself. Forgive yourself for these transgressions and start over fresh the next day.

Anger never lets you win

Every time you lose your cool, you lose control and at times the cost could
be quite high. So learn to manage your temper.

As a little kid growing up on a sheep farm near Christchurch, New Zealand,
Martin was a bright, hardworking boy, prone to losing his temper and getting
angry. He would end up saying harsh words to his friends and family without
often realising the impact of his angry outbursts.

Intent on mending his son's ways, Martin's dad decided on a plan. He gave
his son a sack of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he
must hammer a nail into the wooden fence at the back of their farm. The son
agreed. The first day, he hammered 35 nails into the fence. As the days
passed, the number of nails hammered into the fence gradually decreased. It
was quite a task going all the way to the back of the farm and hammering a
nail. Young Martin figured it was easier to just control his temper, and not
get angry.

And then, one day, he did not lose his cool at all. A day of no nails!
Delighted, he told his father about it. And the father said that for every
day that Martin did not lose his temper, he should pull out a nail from the
fence. Martin did as told, and some months later, all the nails in the fence
had been removed. Martin was pleased. And so was his dad.

The father led young Martin to the back of the farm and pointing to the
wooden fence he said "You have done well, my son and I am proud of you. But
notice the holes left behind by the nails? They will never go away. The
fence will never be the same again. It's like that with our anger too. When
we are angry, we say things that leave a scar. And no amount of apologizing
thereafter can ever remove those scars. Remember that!"

It's a lesson Martin has remembered all his life. And it's a lesson we would
all do well to take to heart too. Keep your cool. Don't lose your temper.
And you will see a significant improvement in your relationships. People
will like you more, they will respect you a lot more - and you will find
that hardly anybody gets angry with you. If you find yourself losing your
cool often, maybe you should set yourself a punishment equivalent to
hammering nails on the fence. Like Martin, you too might then find yourself
controlling your temper a lot better. Good to remember that you can never
really win when you get angry. You always lose -your temper, your cool and a
whole lot else besides.

Saying 'Sorry' is like using one of those erasers on the top of a pencil.
It's easy to use, it feels like you have erased what was written, but the
marks remain on the sheet of paper forever. And in this era of instant
messaging and on-the-go e-mails, it becomes even more important to watch
your words. If you are upset and want to shoot off an angry e-mail or
message, hold it! Draft a mail perhaps - but leave it as a draft. Don't hit
the 'send' button whilst you are angry. Tell yourself that you will take a
look at it the next morning, and only then send it. Chances are, with a
cooler head the next morning, you will realise the folly of sending out the
angry email. And it does not matter that you are in the right, or that you
think your anger is justified. If you lose your cool, remember, you lose.
Period.

Next time you are angry and want to say something, take a deep breath.
Pause. And maybe say nothing at all.

Fever is a higher-than-normal body temperature. Normal temperature is usually defined as 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (F) or 37 degrees Celsius (C). Many healthcare providers would say a person truly has a fever when their temperature is greater than 99.5 degrees F or 37.5 degrees C.

It is not usually brought on by common illnesses. Fever in children presents special concerns for parents, since some children have febrile seizures with fever. These can lead to injury to the child, but this is rare.

The signs and symptoms of a fever depends on what is causing it. At first, a fever can cause a chill. When the brain raises the body's "thermostat," the body responds by shivering to raise the temperature. Shivering produces heat in the body. Once the temperature goes up, the person often feels warm. Mild or moderate fever generally has no long-term effects. The dehydration caused by fever can be avoided by drinking extra fluids. Fevers greater than 106 degrees F can sometimes result in brain damage or death if the fever is not treated within several hours.

A person with a fever may have an infection that is contagious. If other conditions are causing the fever, there are no risks to others.

Treatment & Monitoring

What are the treatments for the condition?

Treatment is usually directed at whatever is causing the fever. Some steps that can help bring down a fever or comfort a person include the following: Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help reduce a fever. A fever may return after the first dose of medication. These medications should be taken as directed throughout the day. Extra fluids should be taken to help avoid dehydration . Sponging or bathing in lukewarm water can cool the skin and reduce body temperature. Ice water or alcohol sponge baths are no more effective than lukewarm water, so these should not be used. Extra clothing and blankets are not necessary. Bundling a person will only cause the fever to rise. Fevers greater than 106 degrees F are very serious. These high fevers need to be treated in the hospital.

What are the side effects of the treatments?

Aspirin should not be given to children or adolescents. A rare condition called Reye's syndrome , a severe inflammation of the brain and liver, has been linked to aspirin use in young people, especially in cases of the flu and chickenpox . All medications have side effects, including allergic reactions and stomach upset. Other side effects depend on the medication used.

What happens after treatment depends on what caused the fever. If the cause of the fever is corrected, the fever generally goes away. Further treatment may not be required.
