You ever watched the 100M dash event at the Olympics? If you have then you've seen these specimens(you can hardly call them human if you ask me) run 100M in less than 10 seconds, flying down faster than you can even imagine running. The coolest thing about it for me though is watching their technique. For the first 3 seconds you watch as they accelerate giving it all they've got and really pushing themselves to get up to their top speed, and then something happens... they relax. All of the fastest runners at that point begin to almost glide. You can see it in the replays when they show the winner running from the front, his entire body is extremely relaxed even though he's running faster than almost anybody else in the world.

There's a lot you can learn about life from sports, and this is one of the greatest lessons out there. When it comes to life you don't want to slow down, you want to calm down, you want to relax. Stress in life doesn't necessarily come from having too much on your plate, in fact some of the most successful people in the world are also the busiest, stress comes from handling it the wrong way.

Most people approach their day without a plan, without a list of critical tasks, with the idea of just surviving one more day so that they can just do it again the next day until that blessed weekend comes and for a few days, or at least a few hours, they can drop into a sort of vegetative state. Now excuse me for saying it but that is absolutely no way to live. Many people will tell you that you need to slow down, clear your schedule, and even though once in a while a vacation is completely necessary, most people just can't afford to stop doing any of the day to day things.

The real trick to de-stressing isn't slowing down, after all if you slow down you inevitably fall behind, the trick is calming down. Think of it in terms of a traffic jam. Have you ever seen that guy that just keeps on changing lanes every time one moves? He usually doesn't get any further than you got, sometimes even losing ground, and all he's got to show for it is a terrible headache and quite a bit of anger. If however you plan ahead, get in the lane that you think will be the quickest lane and just calm down you're likely to get further than the guy switching lanes, and to top things off you haven't got a headache to show for it. At the end I've added a few action steps anyone can do daily to practice calming down and in the process enjoying life more. Remember that life is too short to be wasted away in stress, your goal should always be maximizing free time, time you spend doing things you love, and minimizing time you spend doing the grunt work.
Calming down is a simple and effective way to speed up that grunt work, chip away at the stress, and leave more time for the important things in life while you move towards your goals faster and more pleasantly than ever.

Action Steps:

-Make a Critical Tasks list every night before you go to sleep and read over it very quickly. The reason we scramble around so much is often because we can't remember what we need to do next, if you prioritize a list the day before you'll be surprised how much faster you get things done and how much stress you eliminate doing it!
-Take what success coach Jack Canfield calls a Joy Break each day. For at least 30 minutes do something you enjoy doing. Be that playing with your kids, playing a board game, doing a puzzle, playing video-games or, if you're weird like me, folding laundry. These little joy breaks may take some time out of your day, but they keep you relaxed and happy, and give you something to look forward to while your'e being productive.
-The final thing you can do is to take that list you make each night and really quickly visualize the next day going exactly how you want it to if you get all those things done quickly and easily, as if it was effortless. By doing this you're putting an image in your head that your subconscious can work with overnight planning your next day. This is a small way that you can make a really big difference.
You've just learned how it's not necessary to slow down in order to de-stress your life, but simply calm down and relax while you move towards your goals.
