EAR, NOSE, THROAT, TEETH and EYES
I. Ears
* Have periodic examination of your ears, especially if you notice your hearing decreasing.
* Do not put drops, oil, etc. in your ears without doctor’s advice.
* Do not clean the ears with pins, keys, pens, etc.
* Do not remove foreign objects from the ear without a doctor’s assistance.
* Do not unnecessarily- clean ears after bath with ear buds, etc.
* Loud noises are harmful for the ears.
* Do not slap children / others on the ears.
* Do not allow dirty water to enter into the ears.
* In all cases of ear ache, ringing in the ears, discharge from the ears, giddiness, vertigo, nausea, vomiting etc.- immediately consult your doctor.
II. Nose
* Do not squeeze a boil or pimple around the area of the nose.
* Do not try and remove a foreign object from the nasal passage without a doctor’s assistance.
- Do not unnecessarily pick the nose or blow the nose vigorously.
- Do not wait too long to consult a Doctor when Nose Bleed does not stop
* Avoid unnecessary misuse of nasal drops inhalers, etc. without a doctor’s approval.
* Consult your doctor immediately in case of injury and breathing difficulty.
III. Throat
* Avoid the use of irritants to the throat such as smoking, chewing tobacco / paan, etc.
* Avoid putting coins, marbles, pins, etc. in the mouth.
* Do not shout, scream etc. this causes hoarseness. In cases of hoarseness - rest the throat without misuse till hoarseness passes. If hoarseness persists for more than 7 days, consult your doctor.
* Avoid eating excessively cold/hot spicy foods.
* Avoid talking when food/water is in the mouth.
* Eat food calmly- avoid hurry.
* In case of glandular swelling in the neck, consult your doctor.
IV. Teeth
* Brush your teeth once / twice a day prior to sleeping using a medium tooth brush.
* Massage your gums once a day with your finger for one minute.
* Avoid using abrasive tooth powders, salt, tobacco, etc. for cleaning the teeth.
* Avoid use of any other person’s tooth brush.
* Change your tooth brush at least once every 90 days.
* Use dental floss for removing food particles; avoid the use of pins, etc.
- Do not smoke, use tobacco, chew gum, eat chocolate, candy etc.
Eye Care, Eye Exercises And Eye Check-ups Lead To Clear Vision Lifelong
Eyesight is taken for granted. Only when eyes are strained, we rub them and pretend the tiredness will go away. But this is not the right approach.
Eye care is essential throughout our lives not because we don’t want to wear spectacles but it helps us maintain a clear vision at old age as well. People suffer from various eye problems due to neglect, unhealthy diet and genes. Some common eye related problems are
- Myopia (nearsightedness)
- Hyperopia (farsightedness)
- Presbyopia (middle-age sight/reading glasses)

Eyes are subjected daily to pollution, extreme sunlight, bright lights, glare from monitor screen, television and hours of reading. We only decide to give the eyes rest when we sleep.
10 Basic Eye Care Tips:
1) Splash eyes with water after you get home. This is the best way to cleanse the eyes naturally. There are drops available too which help to remove the grit but use them only after consulting with a good optician or ophthalmologist.
2) Make sure you read in correct lighting without putting any strain. There should be no shadow on the book you are reading.
3) The print of the book should be legible. The size of the fonts should be large enough so that you are not forced to squint to read it.
4) Watch TV in a well-lit room.
5) Wear sunglasses so that they shield eyes from the bright sun’s glare and also protect the eyes from dust.
6) Those wearing contact lens should not wear them while sleeping. Use the solution provided with care to store the lens.
7) Avoid wearing cosmetic lens (fake colored lens) which is worn as fashion accessory.
8) Eye makeup like eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara should be used only of known brands. The products case should be shut lightly after use and should be disposed within a year of use. These are usually breeding grounds for bacteria which cause eye infection.
9) Eye makeup should be removed before bedtime. Use a well known product to remove eye makeup.
10) Eat a well-balanced diet with contains fresh fruits and vegetables like papaya, oranges, carrots. These contain vitamin A, beta carotene and essential minerals which are good for vision. This is especially for today’s teenagers who aim for a waive thin physique without understanding about its consequences on the overall wellbeing.
Eye Exercises:
There are many simple eye exercises given by specialists but some of the easiest ones which can be done by all without any side-effects are:
1) Look away from your computer screen, television and stare outside the window. A change of scenery really helps to relax the eyes.
2) Another exercise is to close the eyes tightly as much as possible. This helps the eye muscles to contract. Hold this for few seconds and release. Blink the eyes few times.
