Law of Karma – “Value Systems for Success”
Self Denial Develops Frustration
In the front there is fire; at the back there is sun. In the night with knees struck to the chin, one receives alms in scooped palms; lives under trees; yet, the bondage of desires does not leave one!
Having analyzed that indulgence in pleasure is not the way to overcome desire, there the other extreme is painted. The author gives a picture of a totally abstinent man. Forceful abstinence is not the way to get rid of desires, as it will only create frustration and results in multiplication of the desires. The law is that whatever you resist, persist.
An ascetic physically gives up all possessions and enjoyment, even the bare necessities of life. He has no clothing, no shelter and scarcely and food. He provides bodily warmth by his posture of knees stuck to the chin. On winter days he warms himself near a fire. He basks in the warmth of the sun. Whatever food is offered is received in scooped palms; he does not even use a begging bowl. He has no shelter, not even a hut and uses tree as shelter. In spite of all such practices, the bondage of desires still remains. Such men may appear to be genuine renunciates. They persecute themselves through self denial. Yet, even in such a man we find the bond of desires and the strings of attachment.
