 Hellooooooooooooooo..............

Celebrate World Hello Day on 21 November 2011

World Hello Day can help to promote world peace through communication, says Bob Robertson, of Robertson Languages International.

21 November 2011 is the 39th annual World Hello Day.

The day was set up by Brian McCormack, a graduate of Arizona State University, and Michael McCormack, a graduate of Harvard University, in response to the conflict between Egypt and Israel in the autumn of 1973 (the Yom Kippur War).

Anyone can take part in World Hello Day. All you have to do is say 'hello' to ten people throughout your day. What could be easier?

The aim is to promote world peace through communication rather than conflict. Global peace starts with communication. By greeting people on World Hello Day, you will be expressing your concern for world peace.

Thirty-one winners of the Nobel Peace Prize are among the many people who have realised World Hello Day's value as an instrument for preserving world peace. It is an occasion that makes it possible for anyone in the world to contribute to the process of creating peace.

So why not promote peace in your community this World Hello Day? Take a wander around your street or workplace, and greet people whom you've never spoken to before – or even people you speak to all the time! To make it more fun, you could say 'hello' in different languages.

To help you out, here are just a few ways of saying hello we came up with in our office. See if you can work out what greeting comes from which language.

  • Bonjour
  • Hola
  • Hallo
  • Aloha
  • Ciào
  • Guten tag
  • Sawa-dee-ka (said by a female)
  • Hej
  • Nǐ hǎo (pronounced 'nee how')
  • Privet
  • Góðan dag (pronounced 'gothan dahg')
  • Shalom
  •  Namaskar

How many more can you come up with? Get brainstorming, and have a very happy World Hello Day!
