Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes who suffered an extremely critical injury yesterday in a Sheffield Shield game at the Sydney Cricket Ground continued to battle for his life after a major brain surgery. Hughes who was batting on 63 for South Australia in the match against New South Wales was felled by a vicious bouncer by quickie Sean Abbott. The ball hit the diminutive batsman lower back portion of his neck and he collapsed on the ground immediately. The tragic incident happened in front of Hughes mother and sister who were in the stands watching the game. National selector Mark Waugh was also present watching Hughes play composedly. The left hander who has played 26 tests for Australia and scored more than 1500 runs was on the doorstep of a return to the national team for the test series against India.He was tipped to replace injured Australian captain Michael Clarke. Cricket Australia in solidarity to the injured cricketer has decided to abandon all the matches this season in the Sheffield Shield. Support is pouring from across the globe and cricket fraternity has rallied behind the talented youngster. Australian skipper Michael Clarke who is a close friend of Hughes is in the hospital and a whole host of former cricketers have visited the hospital. Players ranging from Brendon McCullum AB de Villiers V.V.S.Laxman etc. have come out with words of support to the injured cricketer.
