Malayalam cinema gasps Tamil cinema gains. 2015 has started in the worst possible manner for Malayalam cinema. Among around 18 films that released so far only one or two has made any kind of impact rest sank without a trace. Only Picket 43 and Mili have ended up on the safer side while megastar Mammoottys Fireman has just released. Interestingly in this period Tamil films have gained big from Kerala. I directed by Shankar Ajiths Yennai Arindhaal Dhanushs Anegan etc. have become runaway successes. This is a disheartening trend given the fact that Malayali audience are lapping up even mediocre other language films while disdainfully ignoring even honest efforts from talented Malayalam filmmakers. The decision of channels to offer satellite rights only after ensuring that films have qualityhas further dented the hopes of Malayalam cinema industry. The wide release of Tamil cinemas and the early surge are enough to ensure big ticket films a safe landing. Unless and until the overwhelming influence and domination of other language films are reined in Malayalam cinema is in for real tough times.
