Others actually sabotage your efforts, like giving up the foods you love or finding the time, money, and desire to go to a gym every day. With that said, you are wise enough to realize that eating right and exercising are beneficial to good health.

You are about to learn a new way of living. In recent years, people have come to realize the best way to change bad habits that have taken a lifetime to acquire is to create new habits. If you love sweets, change from sugar to honey, ice-cream to frozen yogurt, soda to flavored water, then plain water. Instead of having your favorite sweet every day, enjoy it once a week, then once a month. Replace it with a healthy sweet.

If you like to add piles of butter, cut it down to one teaspoon. When you eat a salad, use less dressing. You will notice the wonderful flavor of the vegetables like never before. If you are a fast eater, slow down and chew each bite 5 times, then count to 5 before taking another. The way to incorporate all these changes into your life is to actively think before, during and after eating. Be aware of your actions. You, instead of the food, will have control of your eating habits.

Do not keep danger foods (unhealthy or fattening) in the house. If you desire pizza, go out with a group and enjoy 2 pieces instead of four. Order less so there are no leftovers. If you love chips, buy a single-serving bag and eat them slowly. Cut your portions by at least half.

Enjoy one healthy item: an apple; a carrot; some tomato juice; whenever you feel hungry, usually every 30 minutes to one hour. Don't ignore your hunger pangs. Check with your stomach as it is your partner in this new way of living. Is it your stomach that wants food or your emotions that need to fill a void? If you eat when you are emotional, you are ignoring your actual hunger signals. You can eat all day if you pay attention to your stomach and choose healthy foods.

These same lifestyle changes also apply to exercise. If you find it necessary to drive to the market, park at the first open spot and walk to the front door. Don’t drive around looking for the closest spot. If you normally ask a family member to bring you a beverage from the fridge, get it yourself and choose water. If you usually take elevators, climb the stairs. Most important, take a walk. First, walk for 15 minutes every other day. After a week walk for 20 minutes. In two weeks move up to 30 minutes daily. Your body will actually look forward to it.

When you do yard work or clean house, be aware of how you’re moving. Incorporate exercise into each step. Rake the leaves with gusto. Do leg ballet while washing dishes. Dance while dusting. Challenge yourself to clean the whole house in 20 minutes. You will feel invigorated and your house will look great! Surely you’ve heard the old adage, “Laughter is the best medicine”. These silly movements will make you laugh while making you healthy.

Remember, you don’t have to live with bad habits. You can change them to good habits. Also, don’t worry about occasional failures for failure is a form of education. Some of the world's most successful people have failed numerous times before reaching a satisfying level of success. This includes every aspect of life ... career, finances, and HEALTH.
