Law of Karma – “Value Systems for Success”
A human being, on the other hand, can harness the nature according to his will and wish. We are so dependent upon the external world of perceptions, actions, emotions and thoughts that without it we lose our peace of mind. If you are dependent on the world, it is a life of sorrow and suffering only. Gaining independence is a mental attitude, a resignation from worldly joys. You gain independence by the assimilation of Vedanta. Thus, you gain self-sufficiency.
Once a village in a valley was flooded. A man was perched precariously on a huge tree to save himself. On the same tree, on a different branch, there was a bird. Both the man and the bird were using the tree for their safety. Yet, there is a world of difference between the bird using the tree and the man using the tree. The man is dependent upon the tree for his safety whereas the bird is not. If the branch breaks, the bird can fly away. When the branch is swinging in the breeze, the bird is singing cheerfully. But the man is shivering with fear.
Similarly, your dependence on the world must be like the bird using the tree for its safety, not like the man. Be not dependent but enjoy it. When you are dependent, you develop anxiety and tension.
